It was a beautiful June day that I decided to take the boys fishing and a little swimming. The local lake fish had been biting good. We did a little swimming for an hour then decide to start fishing. We were waiting on Mom to show up with food, and I noticed a front coming in from the north. The day before on the lake, a storm popped-up out of the north and we had to get off the water. We decide to start at our best spot, and when I pulled up, I noticed about six fish in deep water. So I had the boys cast to the spot in about 8 feet deep of water. Nick hooked up, but lost the fish next to the boat. I was not sure they were bass. After a little more fishing, Trey hooks up with a big drum and we caught a couple more with some smaller largemouth and smallmouth in between. I decide to move because I was looking for better bass. We had driven by an area earlier that showed a lot of activity on the surface and on the depthfinder. I’m always watching the depthfinder; I believe if you see bait or fish on the screen you will hookup. We started fishing around some structure in 6 to 8 feet of water. Nick caught a poor bass that looked like something had tried to eat it. It had an upper jaw bite on one side and a lower jaw bite on the other side. I was not sure what had tried to eat the fish, but it had to be a big fish as the bass he caught was 15 half inches long.
Then after I hooked a bass on topwater, Nick threw up in really shallow water after I had already called last cast. He yelled, “I’m hooked up and it’s big.” It jumped about 3 feet out of the water and it was a GOOD bass. I told him to take his time in a loud excited voice and so did my wife. Then his line went slack and we all thought that he had lost the fish. He started to reel the rod, and it started to bend over again. The fish had just started to swim towards the boat. Then she headed towards the big motor, and I could tell the line was getting cut on the prop. He was using one of my Powertackle Spinning rods with 8 lb Sunline Sniper FC, so I knew we had a shot at catching him. Nick got him around the motor and made a big mistake…he reeled down to the lure. But, with a little bit of luck, I was able to reach out and grab the fish. It had a little mouth, but I could tell it had weight. I knew it was a six-pounder and Nick couldn’t believe what he had just caught. Once I weighed it and told him it was six pounds and 2 ounces, he was in disbelief of what just had happen. He said “This fish made my year,” and he said he could not fish anymore tonight. We had a hard time getting off the water that night. Kyle and Trey wanted to stay and keep fishing and try to catch a big one. Nick was on Cloud 9 for the next several days after his greatest catch.
